Ekadashi Reminder for ISKCON 2022.05.03

Note: Smartha Ekadashis are not supported! Only Vaishnava Ekadashis are supported! This means that it is not a standard Hindu calendar and does not display the typical Hindu panchanga.

This mini Ekadashi Calendar calculates data for the upcoming Ekadashi vrata based on a given location, including the start time and the fasting period. Additionally, it provides notifications for the next fasting day. The app is rooted in Hindu calendar principles and Jyotish astrology.

The application specifically focuses on Vaishnava (or Bhagavata) Ekadashi, known as Shuddha (or pure) Ekadashis. According to this tradition, fasting should begin after the Dashami concludes, 96 minutes before sunrise on the Ekadashi day.

The calendar offers full support for ISKCON by incorporating both the pre-1990 and post-1990 standards of the organization. The initial standard was set by AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, utilizing Shri Mayapur as the reference location for global Vaishnava celebrations. In 1990, a revised standard recommended using the current location instead of Shri Mayapur.

Current functionality:

1. Configurable program notifications in the system status bar.
2. Main screen displaying:
   • The date of the next Shuddha Ekadashi fasting.
   • The fasting period details.
   • Description of Ekadasi significance.
3. Supports Daylight Saving Time (Summer Time) adjustments for Europe, USA, and Australia.
4. Built-in database featuring 4,000 cities for selecting 'Current location' settings.
5. Comprehensive support for ISKCON, including algorithms for fasting calculations using Shri Mayapur or 'Current location' methods. Notes about historical ISKCON practices are also provided.
6. Language support includes Hindi, Bengali, English, Ukrainian, Russian, Hungarian, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, and French.
7. 'Set Date' and 'Set Time' functions enable users to access information about Ekadashi fasting for a specific historical date within a supported range of years (1961-2061). 'Refresh' option allows reverting to the current moment. Note: Data is not retained between application sessions; calculations are made afresh each time based on the current system clock.
8. Dates calculated with the 'Use 'Current location'' option align with the current ISKCON calendar - "Gcal 2011" (Gaurabda Calendar authored by Gopalapriya pr. from ISKCON Bratislava).
